Driving

Taipei GTA scooter guide

Riding a scooter in this game is not about holding the throttle and hoping. It is four habits — short acceleration, early braking, an honest camera and a patient right hand — and once you have them, the city stops being an obstacle course.

If the keys themselves are still unfamiliar, read the controls reference first; this page assumes you know which key is which and concentrates on what to do with them.

First, the keys you will actually use while riding

Scooters and cars
ActionKeyWhen to use it
Enter / Exit a vehicle F Stand close to the scooter or car and wait for the prompt before pressing.
Accelerate W Tap it in short bursts until you can feel how fast the vehicle picks up.
Brake / Reverse S Brake before the corner. Keep holding it at a stop and you will back up.
Steer left / right A+D Look at the junction, not at the vehicle, and steer early.
Handbrake / Drift Space Driving only. On foot the same key jumps, so practise it on an empty road first.
Horn / Radio H+Q Sound controls that only exist while you are in a vehicle.
Change camera / Look behind V+C Use it when the vehicle hides the road ahead — the fix is usually the camera, not the steering.

Habit 1: accelerate in bursts, not in one long press

Tap W rather than pinning it. Your goal for the first few minutes is not speed, it is knowing how quickly the scooter answers the throttle. Vehicles in games like this accelerate smoothly and then stop feeling smooth — there is a point where each extra second of throttle buys you noticeably more speed and noticeably less time to react.

  • Tap, release, tap. Repeat until you can guess the speed before it arrives.
  • Pick a straight road with clear sightlines. Turning while you are still learning the throttle is the same as doing two new things at once.
  • Test the top of the range once on purpose, somewhere empty, so it stops being exciting.

Habit 2: brake before the corner, not in it

This is the single change that stops most crashes. Slow down early, so that you are already at cornering speed when you turn the bars. Braking mid-corner does two bad things at once: it changes how the vehicle is balanced and it occupies the finger you wanted for steering.

Habit 3: fix the camera before you fix the steering

When you cannot see the road, the instinct is to steer harder. The actual problem is usually that the vehicle is between the camera and the corner. Press V to change the angle and C to look behind you. A driver who can see is a driver who stops steering twice.

Habit 4: leave drifting until turning is boring

Space is the handbrake while driving — the same key that jumps on foot. It is fun, it looks good, and it is a terrible third thing to learn. Get to the point where a normal corner needs no thought, then try it on an empty junction. If a corner feels slippery, brake earlier and test it somewhere empty before you rely on it.

A five-minute practice route

  1. Straight line

Accelerate in bursts, brake to a full stop, accelerate again. Three times.

  2. One corner, slowly

Approach at half speed, brake before the turn, steer with A or D and exit.

  3. Same corner, twice in a row

Add one more element: signal nothing, just take it again, now expecting the turn.

  4. Camera check

Mid-straight, press V. Note the angle you prefer, and use it from then on.

  5. One real destination

Open the map with M and ride to the nearest thing you find interesting.

Practise the driving keys now

Filter the table to the driving context and drill the pairs. Getting W, S, Space and V right without thinking is most of the technique above.

Where the riding leads

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop the scooter from sliding on corners?

Brake earlier and take the corner at a lower speed. Sliding usually comes from arriving too fast and then braking mid-turn, which unsettles the vehicle exactly when you need it stable.

What does Space do while riding a scooter?

It applies the handbrake, which is what drifting is built on. On foot the identical key jumps, so context matters more than the key.

Should I ride a scooter or drive a car?

Scooters turn faster and are easier to place on narrow streets; cars are steadier and give a different view. Try both — the game asks nothing of you either way.

Why does the camera keep blocking the road?

Vehicle-mounted cameras sit closer to the vehicle than you expect. Press V to cycle angles and C to look behind; finding one angle you trust is faster than fighting the steering.
